March 30 (WTN) ; Reality shows are the in thing in Indian television today. Few other shows and sops can rival reality shows when it comes to TRP numbers. The trend has picked up so aggressively in the last few years that every second channel is floating a new reality show every month and making huge money by virtue of their popularity. One big factor for reality shows getting so obsessively popular is their viewer connect. The shows target and pick contestants from every nook and corner of the country. They unite people like nothing else. People from every nondescript village today see a chance in making it big through these reality shows. People across regional barriers are called to vote for their favourite contestants through SMS that in turn makes for a pan-India aggregation, where a large multitude of the populace come on a single platform for a common purpose.
Reality shows have opened the doors to the middle class to have access to the world of fame and glitter. Till some years back, it was no less than a dream for a small town boy or girl to reach Mumbai and make a mark. Today that has become a tad easier. Talent gets instant recognition and accolades as it reaches people’s homes in quick time. The struggle to make the cut is much easier now. There is no long waits outside producers’ gates anymore. There is no sleeping on the bench or going without food in search of work. The shows handhold the newbie and take him to the right places and the apt platforms to help him grow. They literary groom talents and make them money spinners in no time.
But it is not all that rosy within as it seems from without. The pitfalls and negativities of such quick claim to fame are many. Despite all the right coordinates in place, only very few of those reaching the reality shows really come out as big singing or dancing stars of the future. In the last 10-15 years of reality shows, we have just a couple of artistes who have made some name. Most others have sunk into oblivion. The reality shows are basically money making machines for entertainment channels. That’s the main motto behind holding the shows. The spinoff is what we get as talents. The talents are ostensibly ‘groomed’ but the pressure they go through is immense. There is pressure to perform, pressure to do well, pressure to handle grueling schedules, pressure to bear the humiliations of the groomers and judges.
Not all are adept at handling such pressure and many buckle under them. The trauma and the psychological setback such contestants face, is a lifelong wound. The world doesn’t care. The show goes on. Those who are left behind are doomed to sulk alone. The mad craze for entry to big shows and be popular overnight has gripped the nation in an obsessive frenzy.
Every parent today literally pushes his child to get into some show. Even success is no longer as important as the easy money such participations guarantee. No one bothers the pressure a child goes through to compete and excel. No one takes failure happily. Ultimately, childhood wilts instead of blooming. Had the reality shows been really talent hunt shows with less importance on the money factor, things would have been much more humane. But such an ideal situation is far from reality today.
