A three days national seminar on "Rock Art of Central India

Bhopal: A three days national seminar on "Rock Art of Central India: With Special Reference to Madhya Pradesh" which was inaugurated on 5th December, 2017 at IGRMS, Bhopal concluded with a valedictory session at Rock Art Conference Hall on 7th December, 2017. The seminar has been   organized by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghrahalaya (IGRMS), Bhopal. In the morning session the participants/scholars deliberated upon the various aspects of rock art research in the Central Indian region and India as a whole. Dr. Simadri Ota (Former Joint Director General, Archaeological Society of India) who was presiding over the session congratulated the organizers for the excellent organization of this seminar on rock art studies of Central India. Dr. Ota also congratulated all the participants for presenting papers in the seminar.  

In the afternoon session the valedictory address was given by Prof. V. H. Sonawane.  Dr. Sonawane in his address deliberated upon the roles played by IGNCA and several individual scholars like Dr. V. S. Wakankar, A. K. Pandey and several others in study of rock art of central india. Dr. B. L. Malla (Project Director, IGNCA) gave a brief background of projects to be initiated by IGNCA like field documentation, workshops, orientation workshops, exhbitions in the Central indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh in the coming years. IGNCA will be organizing workshops on Rock Art in the state of Madhya Pradesh very shortly. Dr. Sarit K. Chaudhuri, Director, IGRMS, Bhopal in his address highly appreciated the seminar for its definite approach and in chalking out a clear cut future plan for rock art studies in the state and India as a whole. paper by Prof. Somnath Chakraverty and Dr. Ruman Banerjee, this paper elaborated extensively on the landscape of rock art in Madhya Pradesh and its distribution pattern and the sites with dense concentration of sites. Prof. Ravi Korisettar was the chairperson at the session.

The session concluded with the reccomendations/ suggestions by participants at the seminar. Dr. V. H. Sonawane at last summarized the papers presented by scholars during the 3 days seminar.  It has been observed in the papers presented in the seminar that several new rock art sites has been discovered in Madhya Pradesh. The IGNCA under its national project on Rock Art will systemically document these sites and organize awareness campaigns, special lectures and workshops for scholars, students and general public at large in the region from time to time in collaboration with IGRMS, Bhopal.
