Mockery of clean India drive even when Bhopal was ranked No.2 in Swachh Survekshan 2017

Monday - December 25, 2017 10:14 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

Bhanpur landfill site in Bhopal makes mockery of clean India drive. With thousands of tonnes of garbage burning at Bhanpur landfill, making it very hazardous for residential areas in the vicinity of the landfill site, affecting normal life in the area.
After Union Carbide tragedy, another environment tragedy is on anvil with sloppy approach of Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) towards Bhanpur landfill. Like a monster was sitting on Union Carbide, Bhanpur landfill will be a cause of tragedy in decades to come as more and more residential sites are being developed around the landfill.  Why is Town and Country Planning not acting against builders who are developing residential complex in the area and playing with life of people who would occupy these premises. This means that the government is completely insensitive towards life of people. The underground water quality of area near the landfill presumably be highly adulterated and with so many toxins, it can be poisonous also leading to sever health hazards, not to mention high air pollution in the area.

According to Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) the garbage collection vehicles will move to new dump site Adampur Chhawni instead of Bhanpur garbage dumping site. Is this a solution to woes of Bhopal? BMC is taking about scientific closure of Bhanpur plant but basic issues related to disposal were not followed by BMC.  Bhopal Municipal Corporation has not made concrete efforts as waste material and plastics are scattered all around the site thereby causing health hazards. Open truck are used to transport waste to the landfill site. This causes dropping of garbage, contamination of soil, odor, and nuisance problems along the transport route. The dumped waste is not covered and waste remains open to atmosphere. There is no mechanism to cover this waste. The site is not properly fenced to prevent unauthorized entry of persons/habitations and stray animals within the disposal site. There is widespread dumping of organic waste which is mixed with inorganic waste despite BMC had started segregation of both waste while collection. But, this effort looks in vane.

According to a research paper “A Review on Municipal solid waste collection of Bhopal city “ published in International Journal of Scientific Engineering and Technology. The generation of solid waste will increase from 800 tons per day (2014) to almost 1000 tons per day in 2028. It needs little imagination to realize to what proportions waste will accumulate by 2028, at the present backlog rate of 98 tons per day, in simple words out of the 800 tons generated per day only 650 tons is collected leaving a backlog of 150 tons per day.
Will Adampur Chhawni become another Bhanpur garbage dumping site?
