The abyssal zone forms a large portion of the ocean and might be considered a biome unto it self –a place where plant and animal communities have learned to exit without the source   of energy used by the rest of the planet –light from the sun.

Ocean –dwelling plankton and plants create organic matter by photosynthesis. But life in the abyss, where no light penetrates, requires a different set of rules.
