Government issues new health warnings for tobacco product packs

April 6 (WTN) ; The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, issued a notification (G.S.R. 331(E)) on April 3 making new rules for Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labeling). The new rules shall come into force on the 1st day of September, 2018.

For smoking and smokeless forms of tobacco products, the word “TOBACCO CAUSES CANCER” and the word “TOBACCO CAUSES PAINFUL DEATH” shall appear in white font colour on a red background and the words “QUIT TODAY CALL 1800-11-2356” shall appear in white font colour on a black background.

For first twelve months the following image shall be used


 

For subsequent twelve months the following image will be displayed replacing the above.
 


 

According to studies in Indian Journal of  Medical and Pediatric  Oncology,  tobacco use kills nearly six million people worldwide each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, globally, there were 100 million premature deaths due to tobacco in the 20th century, and if the current trends of tobacco use continue, this number is expected to rise to 1 billion in the 21st century.India is home to 12% of the world's smokers. More than 1 million die each year due to tobacco in India.
