April 13 (WTN) - Not long ago, Nirbhaya spurred us to revamp criminal laws to fight sexual crimes committed against women. Let Aasifa rape case be the trigger for stronger action on crimes committed against children, especially young girls.

Aasifa , the nomad girl was abducted on January 10 this year from Rasana village of Hiranagar tehsil in Kathua and her body was found in bushes on January 17.

Medical examination had revealed that she had been raped and subsequently murdered by strangulation.

The alleged mastermind Sanji Ram , a former Revenue Department official in the rape and murder of a minor,  Bakkarwal (goatherd) girl in Jammu and Kashmir s Kathua district surrendered before Crime Branch sleuths. Sanji Ram through this heinous crime wanted to instill fear among the members of the nomad community so that they would leave the village.

The entire country has come forward to put pressure on the police and the government.

Following a public outrage over the gang rape of a minor girl in Jammu and Kashmirs Kathua,  Union Minister Maneka Gandhi on declared that her ministry intends to amend the POCSO Act making provision for death penalty in child rape cases.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi along with sister Priyanka Gandhi led a midnight protest by the party workers at India Gate last night.

Many others have taken to social to express their agony and anger.

Here s what the celebrities tweeted:
Huma Qureshi -  I am Hindustan.I am Ashamed. #JusticeForAasifa 8 years old. Gangraped. Murdered.
In ‘Devi’-sthaan temple.

Javed Akhtar: All those who wish justice for women should stand up and raise their voices against the rapists and their protectors in Unnao and Kathua.

Tisca Chopra: So pained to read about Unnao and Kathua rapes... How strongly the government responds will be its true test. At least I won t vote for them coming elections if they don t take action this time.

Farhan Akhtar: Imagine what goes through the mind of an 8-year-old as she is drugged held captive gang raped over days and then murdered. If you don t feel her terror you are not human. If you don t demand Asifa get justice you belong to nothing.

Tammannah Bhatia: An 8-year-old raped in J&K. A 16-year-old raped and a protesting father beaten to death in order to protect the rapist. Where is this country headed? How many Nirbhayas need to be sacrificed before reforms are made. A country that can t keep its women safe is a country with a rather regressive mentality that needs therapy.

Social Media is full of anger for such incidents of rape with minors,  which happens every now and then. It is time now that the government should take a very tough stance so that the culprits are given a punishment that becomes a deterrent for offenders in future.
