Bhopal: Under the educational programme 'Do and Learn' organised by Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangarahalaya (IGRMS) children learnt pottery making from traditional pottery artists from Kutch, Gujarat under the pottery workshop. Children started training from artist  Ibrahim Kasim from Kutch. . Kasim told we gets Rann ki Mitti from a lake area near our village.  This soft clay is shaped into a pot on a potter's wheel and left to dry in the sun then baked in a furnace. The painted utensil baked takes a lot of time.

There is a story in our village that - In ancient times it took six months for a potter to bake the pots. One day just as the potter had kindled his Niyani, the Kiln, a group of eunuchs persuaded by soldiers took refuge inside the urns kept in the kiln in spite of all the efforts of the potter dissuade them. After a while the potter heard a voice proclaiming that his pots had turned golden, but this did not cheer him up. Then, a second voice was heard saying that half of his pots remained unbaked. At this, the potter rushed to the Kiln and was delighted to find the eunuchs alive inside the unbaked pots. Since then, the pots take only a day to get baked, however some pots are always left unbaked.

Smt. Sarah Bai Ibrahim told the children shaping of soil by hand and wheel. After that using red, black, and white clay-based paints to decorate and piece of pottery with distinct community specific designs.

Artists Ahmed Qasim and Hameed Ahmed taught to registered participants make the painted pottery, placing the clay in the chalk and keeping the chalk in the wheel while running chalk and prepares pot.-Window To News
