Bhopal: Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya demonstrates the aesthetic qualities of India's traditional life styles, and the continued relevance of local traditional knowledge and Field work is done from time to time to make constant flows with modern society. Similarly, Dr. P. Sankara rao Asst. Keeper successfully completed the field work covering the tribes of Khasi (East Khasi Hills District) Jaintia (West Khasi Hills District.) and sub tribe of Khasi "Bhoi" (Ri Bhoi District) in Meghalaya.

During this two week long field work in these areas ethnographic collection and documentation of different traditional weekly markets of both khasi and jaintia tribes were covered. Documentation of "Marbisu" traditional khasi tribal get together started since 1920 onwards was also undertaken. It is being celebrated with great fervour and unity. This large cultural congregations going to complete 100 years in 2020, regularly held once in year, young boys and girls with colourful, and elegant attires take part with great zeal. People still follow the traditional way of life in these villages and continue to hold rich art and craft traditions. Documentation also covers textile handloom tradition in Ri bhoi district among khasi Bhoi tribes. During this field work ethnographic objects have been collected which belong to different categories particularly agriculture, musical, household, basketry, art and craft and textile etc.

Culture is still a strong set of beliefs, habits, faiths and norms that have been acquired since time immemorial and are a valuable legacy, they leave it like a souvenir for the future generations. Sustenance of any social system depends on its culture and cultural values of that society. In this case, Meghalaya has one of the world's largest surviving matrilineal society and culture having a special place and position in the world. The people of Meghalaya have a very close relationship in tune to the natural environment. The mawphlang sacred forest (sacred grove) and the way they protect, preserve the age old practice is a proof in itself that how this region has an immense importance towards biodiversity of different life forms of plants, flowering trees, orchids and butterflies etc.-Window To News
