#MeToo goes viral

Saturday - October 13, 2018 9:53 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

WTN- It was in October, 2017 that American actress Alyssa Milano first posted a tweet urging women to speak up about their experiences with sexual assault or harassment using the phrase “me too.” Overnight, social media erupted, as #MeToo took hold in literally every corner of the world by the end of the year.

Similar movements started in multiple languages, including Arabic, Farsi, French, Hindi, and Spanish. Today, women in 85 different countries are using the hashtag to bring attention to the violence and harassment they face in daily life and to demand change. Even though the civil rights activist Tarana Burke started the “Me Too” movement over a decade ago, at that time it did not become a rage. The reason is not only the lesser penetration and popularity of social media around 2008, it is said that over the decade several minor movements and campaigns against sexual harassment took place which helped building up consensus and raising awareness.

Over these 10 years activists and women’s rights bodies across the world slogged hard over the groundwork to raise a global movement against this pervert mentality that subjects women to sexual misconduct. Harassment is common across the board in organisations, groups, homes, personal and professional spaces, in parties and picnics, in public and in homes. It is not just limited to workplace but some form of harassment in varied manifestations pervades all society irrespective of social strata or class. This is not something new; for centuries women have been subject to various overt and covert forms of domination, exploitation, abuse, subjugation, misconduct, harassment, biases, unfair deals and suppressions to ‘control’ them and limit their possibilities so that they do not outsmart the male ego by usurping his domains of expertise.

In developing countries like India the oppression is more complete and ruthless because of several social factors like economic dependence of women on the male members of the family, illiteracy and ignorance, lack of social security and lack of better policing etc. along with an inherently feudal mindset of male chauvinism that puts the male species above womenfolk in intelligence and abilities. Women in India have a feeble voice and compared to their foreign counterparts the Indian woman is much more inhibited and her voices of protest much more muted due to the adverse social circumstances.

Every step she takes is a deal breaker and full of risks and uncertainties; every move she makes is greeted with jeers and suspicion as a male-dominated society is not accepting of women’s liberation and her fight to stand with men on an equal footing. Today, thanks to the social media unity and the #MeToo movement, women have found a platform to come out in the open with their stories of humiliation and trauma and grill the perpetrators to shame them publicly. This is a small step in the direction of women’s emancipation but a step in the right direction nevertheless.

When celebrities dare and break the shell of inhibition, it creates an impact in society and much as it encourages lesser women to also open up and raise their voice against injustice and torture, it also gives a reason for men to fear backlash and rethink their action and approach towards women.
