EQUATOR & TROPICS

Friday - November 23, 2018 10:31 am , Category : Fun Facts

WTN- The Equator and the tropics are representation by imaginary lines that geographers over the centuries  have assigned to position on the Earth that correspond to certain mathematical , astronomical and climatologically phenomena.

The Equator is an imaginary line circling the earth, halfway line between and always equidistant from the North and South Poles. It is assigned the latitude of 00 , the only line of latitude , or parallel , that is a great circle.(All over great circles are lines of longitude , or meridians)

Location along the Equator receive the sun’s rays most directly year round and therefore are always warm, except in high mountains.

Any great circle around the Earth divides it into two equal halves called hemispheres. The Equator divides the Earth into the Northern and southern Hemispheres. The earth also can be divided into Hemispheres along specific lines of longitude. For example , the 20O W meridian and the 160o  E meridian divide the planet into the Eastern and western Hemispheres . The Eastern Hemispheres is commonly defined as Europe , Africa , Asia ,Australia , and New Zealand and the Western , Hemispheres as north and south America.

The tropics is the name given to the region that lies between the 23o 30o line of latitude north of The Equator and the line of latitude 23o 30o south of The Equator. These lines of latitude or parallels are known as the Tropic of cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, respectively.

The Tropic encompass 36 percent of the earth land, including parts of North and south America  Africa , Asia and Australia . the term subtropics refers to the zones between the Tropics of cancer And Capricorn and 40o north and south of The Equator.

The tropic generally experience warm temperature year-round with monthly averages  between 77o and 82o F. the warm temperature primarily result from the fact that the tropic receive the sun’s rays more directly than other places as the Earth orbits the sun.

The amount of precipitation in the tropic , however ,various greatly between one area and another. Wet climates and habitats that include rain forest , with their wide variety of plant and animal species are common  in the region . yet some areas experience a tropical wet and dry climate with three main seasons cool and dry, hot and dry, and hot and wet, life in these zones depends on abundant rain in the wet seasons.
