Use car heater with caution

Wednesday - November 21, 2018 7:34 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

WTN: In winters it can get really cold inside your car at times and the first thing we do is to switch on the heater found in most cars today to warm up the interiors. It seems handy and easy to do so but there are some dos and don’ts in the use of heaters which we must keep in our mind as misuse or overuse can harm our health. There are incidents of people suffocating to death due to the heat inside the car as a result of heater overuse.

It must be remembered that keeping the heater on for a good duration can lead to excessive carbon monoxide buildup inside the vehicle’s cabin along with the carbon dioxide release by us, and inhaling the mix can be fatal at times if caution is not exercised.  It is advised by automobile experts not to switch on the heater as soon as we get inside the car.

Immediate operation leads to possible engine overload since the engine is cool at that time. This sudden temperature fluctuation can heat up the engine too and it often leads to wastage of fuel, since the engine works hard to keep the car’s insides heated up. This is one aspect of the issue. Also some people switch on the AC along with the heater thinking that it will create an ambient temperature and lessen the harmful impact of exclusive heater usage. But even this practice is wrong and detrimental for the engine.

The best way is to open the car windows a bit during the heater use. This will lead to the required ambient temperature inside. Infusion of natural air from outside will also reduce the impact of the artificial heat of the car heater.  Starting the car engine in a garage or basement parking or such limited space is and keeping the AC or heater on in that state is also harmful since the car exhaust gas will enter the car’s cabin and vitiate the air inside.

One should save from such a habit. Another factor to be reckoned is that the car’s air recirculation mode must always be switched on, so that the natural outside air always seeps in and doesn’t allow coagulation of Co2. The air blast from the blower must not flow into the face or nostrils. Keep switching the heater off for a few minutes after every half hour of usage. Children are especially prone to getting unconscious or dizzy from prolonged exposure to car heater and that must be kept into consideration. Some people even sleep inside the car putting the heater on, which is dangerous. It is said that even while switching on the car AC, the windows should be kept open for a while to let the gaseous formations inside the car escape.

If we keep reminding ourselves these little tricks to keep ourselves and our families safe, we can have a wonderful driving experience in the brumal setup.  Anyone can today buy and own a car but responsible use and safe driving are things that don’t come easily unless we are aware and conscious of our duties.-
