Kamal Chawla: Players should join politics for the betterment of sports

Kamal Chawla's statement on the Arjun Award's politics, says besides the cricketers, the world class performance of other sports players should be counted

DEC 08 (WTN) - The media should pay equal attention to sports and players other than cricket and cricketers, so the rest of the games and their players can also be encouraged. This is said by the world famous snooker player and brand ambassador of People's University, Kamal Chawla.

Kamal Chawla, 8 international and 11 national medal winners and world number two snooker players, believes that media should show neutrality in the coverage of sports other than cricket and their accomplishments should reach the public. On the Arjuna Award, Sports Association and many issues, WTN interviewed with Kamal Chawla.

WTN: Don’t you think that in addition to cricket, the rest of the games and players are not given the respect and attention they deserve, who is responsible for this?

Kamal Chawla: Yes, you said right that in the country other than cricket and cricketers, sports and players are not given the same preference which they deserved. I have no opposition to cricket or cricket players, they are playing for the country and victory for the India. But I believe that in other sports, Indian players are illuminating the name of the country, trying to hoist the tricolor on the podium, for this they are doing hard work for day-night, so in this way the media should play its role better and the rest of the games and players should also be highlighted by the media, so that the people of the country can get information about their achievements, as well as the enthusiasm of the players can be boosted. With regard to media neutrality, should describe about other sports, so that the people of the country could know that in other sports other than cricket, the country's players are doing their best and winning medals for the country.

WTN: You have been nominated for the Arjun Award four times, but you could not get the Arjuna Award. Do you think cricketers are given more importance for the Arjuna Award, compared to the rest of the players?

Kamal Chawla: Look, I believe that there are cricketers or other sports players, everyone has the goal of performing the best and trying for the victory of country and medals. Cricket is played in limited countries while the rest of the games are played in many countries. For example, in the snooker, renowned sportsmen from 50 to 60 countries in the world show their strength, in such a way, winning a medal there is a challenging task in itself. I think in the performance of the players counted for the Arjuna Award, it should also be looked at which country the player has done his best performance then the award should be given on the same basis.

WTN: In India, sports federations are seized by politicians, while in other countries, sports federations are controlled by sportsmen; don’t you think sports federations, in India, should be controlled by players rather than politicians?

Kamal Chawla: In this case, I have my opinion that there should be two posts in the sports federations, in which one position remains with the politicians or the IAS officers, so they can find sponsors for the players and provide national and international facilities for them, there should also be a position for the players wsho can concentrate on coaching and their needs and improve confidence of payers.

WTN: Silver medalist in the Sydney Olympics, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is the Sports Minister of the country at this time. Do you think that players should come to politics for the betterment of sports?

Kamal Chawla: Of course, I believe international players should come to join politics and work for the betterment of sports in India. I had conversation with Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and I am very impressed with him because the way he works for sports is commendable.

WTN: The last question, who are your ideal players? And what message would you like to give to the youth?

Kamal Chawla: As far as my ideal player is concerned, world famous player Geet Sethi is my ideal and I have learned a lot from him and I want to perform like him for my country too. At the same time, the struggle of great football player Pele also gives me a lot of inspiration, in which way; victory can be achieved even in the opposite conditions everyone can learn from Pele. My message for youth is that sports have a very important role in life. Games develop physical development, as well as one can learn discipline from sports, which is essential for everyone.
