The sorry fate of Train18

Thursday - January 10, 2019 2:03 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

WTN- Do we really deserve what we long for? Are we really fit for the good things of life? If the fate of the sophisticated and super specialty high speed Train 18 is to be regarded, we cannot claim we are civilised yet.  The train, yet not out of its trial runs, grazed past the first experience of insolence and imbecility of our fellow countrymen, as they pelted stones to break the glass windowpanes of the Rs100-cr compartments.

The train returned to the station bearing the marks of savagery and insult. Insult to our national pride and achievement. Insult to our human values and civilisation. More than the celebration of the train touching 180 kmph record speed, it was the sorrow of the damage that coloured the day.

This is what we did to another high-end train from Mumbai where the so-called educated, moneyed and civilised people of a progressive metropolitan city broke the LCD screens fitted in the bogies and carried away the headphones with them, completely ravaging the prospect of the train and tarnishing the country’s name. Linen worth crores go missing every year as they are simply ‘stolen’ by people from trains which they get as part of their bedding.

How can we expect a country of such imprudent and animalistic gentry to grow and develop into a leading power of the world? What is the purpose of the government spending millions of rupees for our benefit if we don’t have the decency to use them? Is it greed, or ignorance? Is it disregard for national property or an ideological war against the establishment with the vow to destroy anything facilitated by the government? Where do we locate the reason for such unpardonable behaviour? There is hardly any country in the world, no matter how poor or undeveloped or illiterate where we see and hear people doing this to their own country! And the scary part is there is no remedy visible at hand against this trend.

Today people are more aggressive and authoritative and more easily flout the law without care or fear. There seems to be some sort of suppressed angst or an undeveloped idea of masculinity/sexuality collectively in the people that vents out through such actions of immaturity. This gives them a sense of win and power over their insufficiencies and hankerings.

Other than this there cannot be any apparent reason why a society could be so destructive of things that are for its own benefit and convenience. Perhaps it is a waste to give us the best things of life. We want to be on par with Japan, China or America but we don’t have the courage or sensibility to be socially more acceptable as humans.

Unless this basic coordinate of life is corrected and understood, and unless we learn to uphold the pride of our nation, what chance do we stand to make it big in the world? All our grand rhetoric about nationalism and love for the country comes to a naught if we don’t translate our thoughts into constructive action.
