Health effects of prebiotics

Thursday - February 14, 2019 5:29 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

WTN: Prebiotics are chemical compounds which promote better digestion. We all are aware of the needs of some friendly bacteria which promote digestion and are necessary for proper bowel functioning. While prebiotics are chemical substances which increase working of these bacteria in the body, they can be obtained from a number of food items naturally.

Prebiotic food items work as fuel for bacteria with special elements including fibrous carbohydrates that nourish the good bacteria and help them increase. This process results in building up of a healthy micro-biome which works as shield against outer attack in form of toxins which get into body through sources like animal products, environment, impure water, common yeast, various viruses and certain types of fungi.

We use antibiotics all round the year and go on falling sick again and again for various environmental or immunity reasons. A weak immune system proves insufficient to defend itself. Thus the cycle of disease and antibiotics go on. Prebiotics promote as well as strengthen the bacteria which make the immune system stronger and reduce ill effects of unfriendly bacteria. Prebiotics is the name given to the chemicals which boost the growth or action of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) that leave positive effect in the well-being in the host’s body.

These microorganisms reside in gastrointestinal tract, where prebiotics bring changes in the composition of organisms in the gut micro-biome. In terms of diet, prebiotics are indigestible fibre compounds which pass without getting digested through the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract and boost up the functioning of the beneficial bacteria that reside inside the large bowel as substrate. Any specific bacterial group does not define prebiotics.

Normally, prebiotics increase the various activities of bifidobacteria as well as lactic acid bacteria impressively. Bifidobacteria and the lactic acid bacteria (LABs) are bacteria in large groups thought to leave a number of beneficial effects on the body especially in improving digestion as well as increasing mineral absorption. Their work raises effectiveness of minerals while providing strength to the immune system.

The product which upsurges bifidobateria is known as a bifidogenic factor. Gum Arabic holds 85 per cent of prebiotic fiber, raw or dry chicory roots has 64.6 percent, raw or dry Jerusalem artichoke has 31.5 per cent, raw dandelion greens has 24.7 g, raw garlic has 34.3 g, raw leek has 51.3 g, raw onion has 69.8 g, cooked onion has 120g, raw asparagus has 120 g, raw wheat bran has 120 g, whole wheat flour or cooked get 125g and raw banana gets 600 g of prebiotics properties. Apple, banana, garlic, onion, cabbage, and beans are some of the most easily available food items from where the regular supply of prebiotics can be maintained naturally.

Prebiotics have two special effects on the body including improved digestive system as well as a strong immunity system. These two are the key factors for a healthy body. Our immune system is the entity which guards against disease- developing factors and fights off almost all kinds of illnesses. On the other hand, a well working digestive system is also another way for a healthy body. -Window To News
