Pakistan’s duplicity exposed

Friday - March 1, 2019 2:09 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

It is one of India’s major diplomatic triumphs to break into a close-knit group of 56 nations, that will eventually also benefit the 185 million Muslims who live in India and their interests

WTN- Exactly 50 years after India was humiliated and turned out of the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) meet in Morocco in 1969 on Pakistan’s insistence, India has again got the honour of being called at this important conference of Islamic countries, despite the country being not a member of the group.

This shows India’s growing importance in global affairs and how India’s concern, involvement and action matter to several Islamic countries, their strategies and economies. It is one of India’s major diplomatic triumphs to break into a close-knit group of 56 nations, that will eventually also benefit the 185 million Muslims who live in India and their interests as it is also their representation when India shares the dais at the coveted platform and explains its stand on issues of common interests that also affect the OIC nations.

India has a friendly relationship with the countries of the Middle East, including Iran and Afghanistan, which have several important trade and strategic ties with India. They bat against all kinds of terror activities and violence, stand with India on several important issues and have at times even criticised Pakistan for its poor response to calls of dismantling the terror modules sheltered in the country. This rift between the stand of the OIC nations and Pakistan has come out in the open with Pak foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi refusing to participate in the conference to be held on March 1 and 2, if India participated in the same. This exposes Pakistan’s double standard once again.

On the one hand it is talking peace and showing eagerness to talk and discuss all the issues of dissention, yet on the other it is shying away from confronting India in the international meet. Pakistan knows that external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj will blast it at the meet and expose all its double standards in front of the world.

To save face, the best way is to stay away from it under some silly pretext, even as India must go ahead and stick to its line. Ideally, it would be sensible for Pakistan to accept what it is in all its truth and use the opportunity to foster a better relationship with India with the promise to act against the terror hubs in the country.

Scurrying away is not going to give it any solution to the problem. If it is really so serious to act against terrorism and promote peace, Pakistan should use every opportunity possible to change the course of the narrative and usher in peace through constructive dialogue and subsequent action. If it has done wrong or has not been able to act tough and smart over the years, it must own up to it and find out ways by means of cooperation and tie-ups with India to mend those and restore the future.

By shunning meetings it is only playing politics that doesn’t go in sync with Imran Khan’s olive branch offer he is so frantically upholding.
