VVPAT-EVM matching controversy between the Election Commission and the opposition leaders

Election Commission opposes the demand for the new system of VVPAT-EVM matching

MAR 30 (WTN) - The eyes of the whole world are hinged on the Lok Sabha elections going to be held in India, the largest democracy of the world. Everyone is waiting for the result of the Lok Sabha election coming on May 23. There is an eagerness, among the people of India as well as many countries of the world, to know whether Prime Minister Modi can win Lok Sabha election once again. But if we tell you that the results of the Lok Sabha elections will not be known on the 23rd of May, but you will have to wait by May 30, then you will be surprised to think that what the reason is?

In fact if we consider the Election Commission’s logic, and 50 per cent VVPAT slips would be matched for the results in the Lok Sabha elections, then there would be difficult of the result to come on May 23, and the result may be delayed by 6 to 9 days. However, the Election Commission has clearly said in the Supreme Court that the method of calculation of VVPAT slips is the most appropriate method for which they are adopting.

For your information, let you know that the Election Commission has adopted a system of calculation of VVPAT slip differently in both the Lok Sabha election and the Assembly election. For the assembly elections, there is matching of VVPAT slip from one polling booth of every assembly seat, and in the Lok Sabha election, there is a matching of VVPAT slip from one polling booth of each assembly constituency. The Election Commission argues that this method is the most correct in which the time is required short, and VVPAT slips are also met.

Indeed, the Election Commission is talking about the delay in the result, because the opposition leaders want to match at least 50 per cent of VVPAT slip to EVM in every assembly constituency in the Lok Sabha elections. On which the Election Commission argues that any kind of increase in the size of the verification will make a very slight difference in the level of confidence.

Here, in the Supreme Court, the Election Commission has requested to dismiss 21 opposition leaders’ petition, saying that they have been unable to provide a solid basis for the change in the current system of calculation of VVPAT slabs.

There are some important points that the Election Commission has made in its arguments in the Supreme Court, which is in this way; Demand for 50 per cent VVPAT slips matching to EVM is impractical. Right now the system of VVPAT slip to EVM matching is correct in one of the booths in every assembly area, in which no shortage has been found yet, and the petitioner is also unable to prove the deficiency. The Election Commission, referring to the petition filed by 21 opposition leaders under the leadership of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, said that no reason had been given in changing the existing system at this time.

The Election Commission argues that it will take more than 6 to 9 days to declare election results after matching of 50 per cent VVPAT slips to EVM, which is not correct. The election process has been started, so now it is difficult to increase the process of matching. There will be a number of steps like increasing election staff and training.

If you believe on the Election Commission's point of view, then its logic is correct in one way. Because after the matching of 50 per cent VVPAT slip to EVM, there will be delay in the election results, and it may take more 6 to 9 days for election results, which can’t be said right in any way. Earlier, when elections were held from the ballot paper, it took 2 to 3 days for election results, to save this time and bring transparency in the elections; the Election Commission has started using EVM and VVPAT.

Here, the BJP says that after continuous defeat in the elections, the opposition has been disturbed, after which they are constantly questioning the credibility of the Election Commission. The BJP has alleged that the opposition parties are annoying with their defeat by doubting the functioning of the institutions like the Election Commission. Now, by seeing the arguments of the opposition leaders and after hearing the arguments of the Election Commission, the Supreme Court gives some guidelines in this matter or then issues an order.
