Questions rise on safety features of WhatsApp and Telegram

Researchers claim: Media files of WhatsApp and Telegram unsafe!

JULY 17 (WTN) - As you know that WhatsApp is currently the most popular instant messaging app in the world. There are around 125 crores users of WhatsApp worldwide. The popularity of WhatsApp is not hidden in India from anyone. There are about 25 crores users of WhatsApp in a country with a large population like India. The biggest reason for WhatsApp's popularity is its end-to-end encryption feature.

WhatsApp claims that messages, videos or audios sent in WhatsApp can be read, viewed and heard only by the sender and the receiver in the end-to-end encryption feature. It means that WhatsApp claims that the privacy and security of users on its platform is completely secure. Some similar claims have also been given by the Telegrams app that messages sent in its platform are completely safe.

But if we tell you that the claims of privacy and security of users of WhatsApp and Telegram are being questioned, then you would have been surprised to read it. Actually, according to some researchers, chatting is still not secure in WhatsApp despite the end-to-end encryption feature. In fact, according to researchers of Symantec firm affiliated to cyber security, there may be attack on media files saved in WhatsApp and Telegram.

Researchers say that Android smartphones users' apps use internal or external storage to save media files such as photos, audio, video or other files. Popular apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram do the same. It means when users download the files that come in these apps, these files are saved on phone's onboard storage, or on micro SD card. In such a situation any hacker can access these media files by sending malware to the memory card. However, internal storage can be accessed only by that app, while external storage can also access by other apps.

This kind of attack by hackers is called 'media file jacking'. Accessing such media files is very easy for any hacker. To get access to these files, any hacker only needs a merchandise app. Let you know that a hacker can also change any outgoing multimedia message without information of user.

For your information, let you know that according to the researchers, not just WhatsApp but app like Telegram is also not safe. Researchers have claimed that there is a bug in WhatsApp and Telegram. Hacker can edit media files sent by users, and can also misbehave or misuse it with the help of this bug.

After questioning the claims of WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption feature, WhatsApp says, “Changes in the storage system can avoid such a problem, and the hacker will not share the hacker media file. However, a new privacy policy will be required to do this.” According to WhatsApp, the company follows the best practice of media storage, and the company is monitoring this issue. The company will solve this problem with upcoming Android updates.

So you have noticed that researchers have claimed that apps like WhatsApp and Telegram are also not safe for the users, and Hackers can easily access media files being sent through WhatsApp and Telegram. So, we advise you to avoid sending any sensitive information of any kind through any media files in WhatsApp and Telegram, because if you become victim of hackers, you may have to suffer the loss. Keep in mind that on the social media networks, your caution is the protection of your privacy.
