BCCI agrees to be under the ambit of NADA

Know why the BCCI agreed to come under the ambit of NADA?

AUG 09 (WTN) - Cricket in India is like a religion. The Indians have different feelings for cricket, which is played in every street in India, other than any game. Two-time Cricket World Cup winner India has given many world class players of cricket to the world. As you know the BCCI is the highest institution of cricket in India. You may also know that for a long time, there has been a debate in the country about the autonomy and rights of the BCCI.

Critics of the functioning of the BCCI had long demanded that the BCCI i.e. the Board of Control for Cricket in India should come under the ambit of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). This demand from critics was opposed by the BCCI for a long time, but after years, the BCCI has finally agreed to come under the ambit of the NADA. The decision of the BCCI was informed by Sports Secretary Radheshyam Julania himself.

According to Sports Secretary Radheshyam Julania, the BCCI has given in writing that it will now follow NADA's anti-doping policy. After meeting with BCCI CEO Rahul Johri, Julania said that now the dope test of all cricketers would be done by the NADA, which was not done earlier. The BCCI itself used to perform dope tests of cricket players at its level. Taking objection to this, the NADA had clarified that the BCCI does not have the authority to conduct dope tests of cricket players.

For your information, let you know that the BCCI had discussed three issues with the NADA. Such as the quality of dope test kits, the ability of pathologists and the process of collecting samples. It is being said that the BCCI has been assured from the Sports Ministry and the NADA that they will be given all the facilities as per the requirement. But for this, BCCI will have to pay some fee, because BCCI is not different from others.

For your information, let you know that till now the BCCI has been refusing to come under the ambit of the NADA. The BCCI was claiming that it is an autonomous body, and no funding is taken from the government on its behalf. The BCCI also argued that it is not a national sports federation which is bound to come under the ambit of the NADA.

However, the Sports Ministry has been continuously telling the BCCI that it should bring itself under the ambit of the NADA. It is being said that as part of the 'pressure strategy' to bring the BCCI under the ambit of the NADA, the Sports Ministry recently stopped the tour of South Africa A and women's teams. It is also being said that the Sports Ministry had also told the BCCI that if the board would not agree to come under the ambit of the NADA, then the South African team coming to India in September will not be granted a visa. Experts believe that after the so called decision of the Sports Ministry, the BCCI has agreed to come under the ambit of the NADA.

Let you know that for a long time, there was a demand that all cricket players should also have a dope test, that too from NADA. As you know, recently the rising young batsman of India Prithvi Shaw has been banned for eight months after being found positive in the dope test, after which it is said that another pressure was increased on the BCCI that it brought itself under the ambit of the Nada. It can be said that the pressure strategy of the Sports Ministry worked, and finally the BCCI had to bring itself under the ambit of the NADA.
