Passengers protest against IRCTC website’s service charge

AUG 10 (WTN) - If you book the reservation ticket for the train from IRCTC website, then this article is very useful for you. We are saying this, because booking tickets from the railway ticket booking website IRCTC can now be expensive. This is why, because now the Indian Railways has decided to reapply the service charge levied on booking tickets from the IRCTC website. For your information, let you know three years ago, after the demonetization, the Modi Government had withdrawn this service charge to promote digital payments. But, passengers have started opposing this decision of the Railway Ministry.

According to the information, the Railway Board has given approval for how the service charge will be levied to book tickets online. In a letter sent on 3 August, the board said that the IRCTC had demanded re-imposition of service charge, which would be levied at the time of e-ticket booking. However, the final decision has not been taken yet. The final decision will be taken by the competent authority. According to the information received from the media, the Railway Board's letter clearly stated that on the advice of the Finance Ministry, the competent authority has decided that the IRCTC may consider re-imposing concession fees and service charges.

Three years ago, in order to promote digital payments after demonetization, the finance ministry had asked IRCTC's website to remove the service charge for booking tickets for some times. Since this charge was not asked to completely abolish forever, as the Ministry of Railways can resume this charge again. According to the information, the Railway Ministry had suffered a loss of about Rs 88 crore due to the removal of the service charge. To compensate for this loss, the Railway Ministry had demanded it from the Finance Ministry, after which the Finance Ministry has given permission to the Railway Ministry to levy this charge.

Railway officials argue that IRCTC's income from internet ticketing had dropped by 26 per cent due to the removal of the service charge incurred at the time of booking the ticket from the IRCTC website. For your information, let you know that the IRCTC used to charge a service charge of 20 rupees for sleeper class for ticket booking and 40 rupees for AC ticket. Now it is up to the IRCTC to decide whether to maintain this charge, or to increase it again.

But, this decision of the Railway Ministry has been opposed by the passengers. According to the passengers, railway ministry does not spend much in online ticket booking, whereas railways incur more resources in window tickets booking. In such a situation, the argument of the Railways that it has suffered loss due to abolition of service charge is beyond comprehension.

At the same time, it has been observed that there has been an increase in online ticket booking since demonetization, so in what way the IRCTC has suffered a loss, the people of this country are not able to understand. Travelers argue that when they are paying to book tickets, why they should pay the service charge for it. People demand that the railways should cut their expenses instead of imposing or increasing service charge on online tickets.
