Buenos Aires, Aug 13 (IANS) Argentine World Cup winner Jose Luis Brown has died at the age of 62. His former club Estudiantes de La Plata tweeted on Sunday that the former centre back died following a long battle with Alzheimer's.
Commonly known as Tata, Brown made 36 appearances for Argentina and scored the first goal of the 1986 World Cup final against West Germany, which Argentina won 3-2. The tournament is best remembered for Brown's teammate Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" act and the "Goal of the Century" against England in the semifinal.
"Without Jose Louis Brown, we never would have won the World Cup in 1986. You never complained about a thing, Tata," Maradona posted on his Instagram handle.
Brown has played for Argentine, Spanish and French clubs before embarking on a coaching career. Most notably, Brown was the coach of the Argentina U-23 team that won the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Among others, the team included Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Juan Roman Riquelme.
