IRCTC again imposed service charge on the reservation ticket booking

50 % discount on IRCTC ticket booking service charges on BHIM app

SEP 06 (WTN) - If you are going to book a reservation ticket for the train from the IRCTC website, then for your information let you know that now you will find it more expensive to book a reservation ticket from IRCTC. Actually, for your information, let you know that IRCTC has now started charging service charges for all types of reservation ticket bookings.

IRCTC will now charge Rs 15 for booking a reservation ticket in a non-AC coach of the train and Rs 30 for booking a reservation ticket in an AC coach. And this service charge will be different from GST. That is, GST will also be levied on the service charge on ticket booking.

After the historic demonetization, the Modi Government had abolished the service charge on train ticket booking through IRCTC about three years ago. This step was taken by the Modi Government with an aim to promote digital payments. The Government at that time argued that people should adopt digital payment method due to cash shortage after demonetization. At that time there was a charge of Rs 20 for booking a reservation ticket in the non-AC coach of the train and Rs 40 for booking a reservation ticket in an AC coach of the train.

In order to promote the digital payment after demonetization, IRCTC suspended the service charge incurred while booking the reservation ticket on the train from November 2016 to June 2017. At the same time, the exemption in service charge extended ahead. But now Railway Board has approved the re-introduction of service charge for booking reservation tickets in the train through IRCTC. On the question of re-starting the service charge, the Railway Board says that the internet ticket revenue was reduced by 26 per cent in FY 2016-17 due to the suspension of the service charge.

However, in view of the resentment of the passengers, the Government is preparing to provide some relief from the service charge incurred while booking the reservation ticket on the train from IRCTC. If a passenger wants to get some relief from the service charge while booking a ticket from IRCTC, then he / she will have to opt for BHIM app for payment option. According to the information, if the passenger pays the BHIM app while booking the ticket, then he/she will be given a 50 per cent discount on the service charge from 1st November.

While booking the reservation ticket in the train from IRCTC and on payment from BHIM app, the service charge in the non-AC coach of the train will be Rs 10 instead of Rs 15 and in AC coach, the service charge will be Rs 20 instead of Rs 30.

However, passengers have protested against the Railway Board’s imposing service charge again. Travelers argue that booking tickets through the website saves the Railways a lot in terms of resources. In such a situation, the Railways should not fee any such charges, due to which the passengers have to spend more money while booking the reservation ticket. The digital payment is a mission of the Modi Government, in which the railways should not collect service charges from passengers while showing participation. Now it has to be seen that if the passengers oppose the service charge levied by IRCTC, will the Railway Board consider withdrawing it again?
