2020 to see five major SUV launches

Tuesday - January 14, 2020 7:12 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

WTN- This is an era of SUVs. As automobile sales touch new lows, perhaps the only segment that holds hope for companies is the SUV segment. The sedan and MPV segments are not doing too well and the entry-level hatchback segment is also not notching high numbers. Apart from the premium hatchback bracket, the SUV segment is one area where the sales figures are encouraging.

People’s proclivity is shifting rapidly towards SUVs for their ruggedness, high ground clearance and space. Also an equally priced sedan somewhere doesn’t command the same heft as an SUV, which is what the GenY youngsters are looking at. There was a time when SUVs were reserved for high-end customers who could shell out anything in excess of Rs 20 lakh or so with ease. But with lowering prices in the competitive market and easy availability of loans, it has become easy for the upwardly mobile Indian to dream of owning an SUV, instead of a crampy hatchback or a low-slung sedan that is lost in the crowd.

Companies are aware of this shifting trend and doing their best to offer the best of SUVs that set global benchmarks. In 2020, there are five major SUV launches lined up by companies like MG, Tata, Skoda and Volkswagen.

Volkswagen is likely to showcase its first offering of the year in the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo in the form of T-ROC. The mid-sized SUV will be pitted against the likes of Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass. It may get a 1.5 litre turbo charged engine and priced something around Rs 18 lakh.

Morris Garage (MG) is launching its full-size SUV Maxus D90 this year, which will be priced in the premium range of Rs 25 lakh. It will be competing with the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The engine is likely to be a 2.0 litre turbo petrol. Dual zone AC, 360-degree cams, 8-way adjustable power seats, sun roof, hill assist control etc will be some of the standard features the car will sport.

Homegrown major Tata is also likely to launch the much-anticipated Gravitas this year. The 2.0 litre diesel mill, the same that runs the Jeep Compass will power this 7-seater offering from the third major car producer of the country. It will have a 6-speed gearbox and the pricing is expected to be between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 19 lakh.

Skoda has not been doing too well off late except for its Rapid mid-size sedan. This year it is pinning hopes on the Karoq, which will be initially offered only in a 1.5 litre petrol engine. The car is not exactly new because it is already on sale globally, but for India it certainly is an exciting beginning. It will be priced in the Rs 20 lakh range.

French major PSA is going to enter India officially for the first time in 2020 and its first offering is likely to be a mid-size SUV C5 Aircross. The model made its global debut in 2017. Though competing with Jeep Compass, it will be longer than it and priced in the Rs 20 lakh bracket.
