Is the world facing biggest threat to peace after World War II

Monday - October 15, 2018 4:14 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

WTN- In first half of 20th  century, world witnessed two world wars primarily due to fact that colonial powers of Europe were expanding their colonies and eventually ended up fighting within themselves. World War II made nations realize that international co-operation and maintaining international order was essential. This resulted in formation of United Nations.

During second half of 20th century post World War-II, America and USSR emerged as most powerful nations. This led to cold war between both countries and both of them heavily investing in weapons of mass destruction. Near war like situation developed between America and USSR, when Cuba under Fidel Castro proclaimed Cuba as communist state and became ally of erstwhile USSR .But, war was avoided by both super powers with fear of widespread destruction.

Balance of power was again established with formation of America dominated NATO and USSR dominated Warsaw Pact, which was primary reason that no real war happened in the era of Cold War. With disintegration of USSR, the fear of war was allayed as America became the dominant power and Russia was marginalized due to its economic problems.

First half of 21st century is again witnessing global tensions between world's nuclear powers with deteriorating US-Russia relations due to Russian and American involvement in Syria and differences between Trump & Putin; North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatening USA, North Korea and Japan; China testing an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, which is capable of striking everywhere in the world within half an hour ; unending Israel-Palestine conflict and Pakistan provoking India with continued support to terrorism; recent missile test by Iran and intention to develop nuclear weapons. All these are pointers that are indicating that fears of conflict skyrocketing and eventually leading to World War III.

With five nuclear weapon states under NPT and India, Pakistan, North Korea the other three with nuclear weapons, any misadventure by any nation will lead to a such a holocaust that entire mankind shall be under threat. It is good time that all nations together come forward for complete nuclear disarmament.
