Pachmarhi: A Trekker’s Paradise

By Jaya Khare
Pachmarhi, a jewel among hill stations of the country, is a tourist hotspot in summers wherein people flock from all corners of the country.

Its valleys and ridges, the sylvan surroundings enriched by the bountiful dash of teak, sal and bamboo patches, waterfalls, hills and peaks and caves and the languid sleepy ambience make it an ideal location for peace and rejuvenation.

Tucked away in the ensconce of Satpuda hills, far from the din and bustle of the madding crowd, Pachmarhi has a unique yet diverse ecosystem that sets it apart from other hill stations. By virtue of its terrain and topography, Pachmarhi offers plentiful opportunities for trekkers, rock climbers and simple walkers.

During the monsoons, hide and seek between the cloud, mist and sudden bright bursts of sunshine with intermittent rains swooping down the hills and slopes making dazzling patterns across the bamboo thickets and Jamun groves make for an ecstatic experience.

Apart from the natural beauty, Pachmarhi is also dotted with churches, old forest buildings of British settlers, and colonial heritage strewn in various shapes and forms. It was here that the forest department of MP was born when the soldier turned forester Capt James Forsyth constructed the Bison lodge in 1862, now a beautiful museum showcasing the flora and fauna of Pachmarhi.

Pachmarhi got its name from five caves known as Pandava caves where the Pandava brothers stayed during their exile. These caves also became the shelter to Buddhist monks in the 1st century.

Among the major tourist attractions, today is the Priyadarshini Point from where one can see the three major peaks of Satpura Range, Chauragarh, Mahadeo and Dhoopgarh - the highest peak of the state. The sunset and sunrise as experienced from this point are unparalleled.

Another is Mahadeo cave shrine atop Mahadeo hill, located 10 kilometres from Pachmarhi that houses an impressive Shivlingam. One reaches the shrine after a winding climb through the sal forest.

To the east of the hill is an excellent cave shelter with beautiful rock cave paintings estimated to be 10,000 years old. Jata Shankar is another sacred cave with a rocky formation resembling the locks of Lord Shiva.

The Jambu Dweep stream flows down a mass of loose boulders over the cave. Chhota Mahadeo is another beauty spot that has a mass of rocks overhanging a stream and a spring. Also dedicated to Lord Shiva is Chauragarh, 4 kilometres from Mahadeo.

A prominent landmark of the area, the summit of Chauragarh is crowned with emblems of Mahadeo worship. Apart from the must see Bee Falls, there is Handi Koh with a 300 feet high precipice and Duchess Falls that is a trekker’s delight.

The descent from the falls is steep and it takes nearly 4 kilometres to reach the base of the fall’s first cascade. Walking downhill in the south-westerly direction one reaches Sunder Kund, a huge rocky pool that beckons for a restful swim.

Ridhara is a popular picnic spot where two streams meet at a junction. On the Denwa stream is the Vanshree Vihar where the forest grows in different shades of green to provide the perfect backdrop to the stream. The Satpuda and Bori Tiger reserves are part of the Pachmarhi ecosystem and a visit to these places rounds off a perfect nature trail.
