Smoking and cancer

By Jaya Khare
That smoking causes cancer is now a medically established fact. The high nicotine content in cigarettes is a highly carcinogenic element and can act as a trigger for cancerous growth with constant use. Unfortunately, millions of people worldwide die due to cancer of the throat and mouth subsequent to prolonged use of tobacco, in the leafy form that is chewed or in the form of smoke inhalation generated from the regulated burning of the leaves in a concentrated pack that is called a cigar.

In India, due to easy availability of various forms of tobacco, and relative lack of awareness and education, there is a large population that is prone to getting some form of cancer at some point in time or are already victims of the dreaded disease. Every year lakhs of young people fall victims to the disease either due to ignorance or due to the neglect of the threat such risky habits pose.

This is not only a loss of precious human resources and young talents but also burdens the state with a huge financial cost. The habit that starts with fun and excitement or for the momentary feeling of high turns into an addiction with time and it is hard to get away from this, either due to peer pressure or lack of self-control/self-determination.

It starts mostly in high school or college life which is an impressionable age and the act somehow lends a macho feel. Smoking is played up as something associated with manliness and young boys find a hint of valour and glory in it. This is the usual Genesis that ends up in a lonely abyss. Education, awareness, anti-tobacco and anti-smoking drives are a must in society to wean away the young from this habit. Such awareness measures must start from junior school level so that there develops a general abhorrence towards smoking and tobacco chewing.

Parents and teachers should also lead by example because children imbibe bad habits fast. The open sale of cigarettes, especially around education institutes should see a complete ban. Easy accessibility is one big reason for the spread and penetration of the menace. Also, the government can levy taxes to make cigars very expensive that will push it beyond the reach of a vast majority of people. Also, proper diagnostic facilities must be established in government hospitals and health centers in small towns so that there is early detection of cancer, which can save several lives.-WindowToNews
