Signature Bridge- People leaving their ugly imprints wherever they are finding space

WTN- Delhi’s Signature Bridge was launched amid much fanfare and media limelight as a new landmark of the capital city. But it comes as no surprise that within a week of its dedication to the public, the bridge has become a real signature post where people are coming in hordes only to leave their ugly imprints wherever they are finding space. This is a typical Indian trend of defacing our public monuments and damaging public property at the slightest opportunity.
We saw this happening on the premium Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express recently where moneyed and purportedly educated and ‘civilised’ travellers stole headphones and scratched and misused the LCD screens on board, defeating the very purpose of launching such a specialised and facilitated train. Same has now happened with the Signature Bridge. Days after its launch, people are seen scribbling rubbish on the steel pylons and walls putting up an ugly picture before the world.
A landmark monument thus now displays a shameful façade that is better hidden than shown. There was utter mismanagement and chaos at the spot with poor handling of the situation as the administration seems to be unprepared to tackle such sudden rush of people. People here are irresponsible and reckless and they need to be guided and tamed in public spaces to help them behave.
This is our country’s misfortune that we are so unenlightened when it comes to public behaviour. We destroy our own country’s assets thinking they are public properties and not our headache. Surprisingly, these Indians don’t behave the same way when they go abroad.
Has it something also to do with poor people management and crowd control at our public places or it is a flaw in our psychology that we take things so for granted in our country that we destroy them at will as long as there is no one looking? This is something that cannot be ‘taught’. It comes from an inherent national pride and feeling for the country. It comes only when we love and respect our country in the right spirit and earnest, over and above the lip service we so valiantly pay. Our actions must show our dedication to the country.
Everyone can excel in high talk – that’s the easiest thing to do. But when it comes to things on the ground we are woefully oblivious of our national duties. National duty is not just fighting at the border. It is also the way we live and conduct ourselves and what picture we present before the world. If we come up as an uncilvilised, uninitiated and dirty people, we tarnish not our names but the name and image of the country.
Unless these apparently lesser coordinates of societal living are mended by us, we are not fit to welcome guests from around the world to visit our places. Before that we must learn how others behave in their respective countries to uphold their specialties, which we here so blatantly disregard.
