KVIC revives defunct centre in Kashmir

Srinagar Aug 22 (IANS) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) on Tuesday revived its defunct training centre in the Kashmir Valley where Mahatma Gandhi gave Charkha training to locals in 1947 officials said.

The centre in Pampore town was destroyed years ago during the peak of militancy.

The occasion was marked by the installation of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi who in 1947 had visited the site and sat under a Chinar tree to impart Charkha and loom training.

"We have revived the multi-disciplinary training centre in Pampore which was destroyed in the 1990s by installing solar charkhas and looms " KVIC Chairman V.K. Saxena said.
