Odisha seeks Doppler radars for real-time weather forecasting

Bhubaneswar Aug 28 (IANS) Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday requested the central government for Doppler weather radars in disaster-prone Balasore and Sambalpur at the earliest.

In a letter to Union Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan the Chief Minister requested him to intervene in the matter and issue appropriate instructions for procuring and installing the radars.

The decision to install four Doppler radars was taken by the union government way back in 2006 for real-time tracking and monitoring of weather.

In the meantime two radars had been installed and made operational at Paradip and Gopalpur said Patnaik. But radars at Balasore and Sambalpur are yet to be installed.

Doppler radar stations at these two locations would help among others track local storm/ thunderstorms in the northern and western parts of the state said the Chief Minister.

It would also provide real-time forecast to save many lives he added.
