CPR skill should be taught in all schools and colleges

Sunday - November 25, 2018 11:05 am , Category : HEALTH

WTN- Of late there have been lots of talks to introduce life skill courses in schools and colleges in India to equip students better with life hacks which make practical living easier in line with global trends.

It has often been found that Indian students, though they acquire lots of technical knowledge in the field of their study, generally go lacking when it comes to practical day-to-day skills that enhance the quality of life of the individual and others in society.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) process is one such skill that is a must for people to know, especially in a country where there is such high incidence of heart attacks. Unfortunately, 90 percent people don’t know this technique so essentially easy and practicable in saving lives in urgent situations.

Not many have even heard of this technique that restores blood circulation and preserves brain functioning in emergency situation of a sudden cardiac arrest so that a person doesn’t die before further measures come up to his rescue. There is a five to six minute window between a sudden cardiac arrest and coma/death of a person and if that crucial time is used for CPR, the chances of that person living rise manifolds.

If a person in know of the technique at once starts the artificial respiration process by compressing the chest in a certain specific way as stipulated, a person’s life can be saved. It must be remembered that a heart attack is not the only reason for a sudden collapse or loss of consciousness of an individual. There can be several reasons for that like a sudden excitement or shock for whatever reason that result in loss of consciousness, and CPR can be used in all such cases.

There have been instances where school students in individual cases have saved lives on the school bus by CPR. At least one individual in every family should know CPR. Doctors are of the view that this is one skill that every individual should be trained in. This is a skill that doesn’t need any extensive training or specific technical or medical requirements. A person of any age and physique or blood group with common sense can be trained and come in handy at the time of need. Therefore, it is pertinent to train every individual in schools and colleges and adults through workshops by NGOs and medicos to be able to do a CPR in times of emergency. There are several such first aid techniques too which commoners are oblivious of.

A little planning and scheduling can help roll out a national programme to teach individuals in these techniques. Thousands of lives are lost every year in freak accidents like fires, insect/bee/snakebites, stampedes, traumas, drowning etc which can easily be checked if people in general are equipped with the simple life-saving techniques. This is a long neglect area which has never been taken up on priority. But with a rapidly growing population, claustrophobic density of human headcounts in small spaces, greater mobility and rising stress-related afflictions, time is never so appropriate to learn this technique.
