New Delhi March 2 (IANS) In order to raise awareness about gender discrimination the Ministry of Women and Child Development has initiated a social media campaign -- #WeAreEqual said an official.

The campaign will culminate in the celebration of International Women s Day on March 8 marked by the prestigious Nari Shakti Award ceremony during which President Pranab Mukherjee will honour individuals and institutions for their exemplary contribution to women s empowerment the ministry said in a statement.

The campaign takes a positive approach engaging both men and women across the cross-section of the society and encouraging to stand up for equal rights and opportunities it stated.

Several eminent personalities have also supported the initiative. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan who has always rooted for gender equality said his assets would be shared equally between his son Abhishek and daughter Shweta.

Amitabh on Thursday shared a photograph of himself holding a card which read: When I die my assets will be equally shared between my daughter and my son... Gender equality... We are equal.

Other prominent personalities such as actors Dia Mirza and comedian Vasu Primlani sportspersons Mary Kom and Sangram Singh and ISRO scientists K. Thenmozhi Selvi Subha Varier and Minal Rohit have also joined the campaign.
