Nation is paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 70th death anniversary today. Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse, 70 years ago on January 30, 1948. He was moving for prayer meeting at Birla House as per his daily schedule.

Mohan Das Karam Chand Ghandhi turned to Mahatma Gandhi's after the beginning of his journey in India in 1917 by starting Satyagrah from Champaran district in Bihar in support of farmers. This movement against the policies of British rule is known as the first non-violent resistance.

Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of mass and moved India towards Independence. His role in Indian freedom movement cannot be measured in words. His policies and agendas were non-violent and his words were the source of inspiration for millions.
His famous Indian freedom movement: A quick view
Champaran, Bihar
This movement was his first direct movement against British Government and first active involvement into Indian freedom politics. The farmers were being forced to grow Indigo in Champaran and badly punished if they protested. Due to this cruelity farmers approached Ghandhiji for help and he started non-violent protest, Gandhi managed to win concessions from the authority.
Kheda, Gujrat
This movement started after heavy flood badly affected the farmer’s crops and they demanded British govt to waive off the taxes. Here, Gandhi started a signature campaign in support for non-payment of taxes. He also requested social boycott of the revenue officials. At last in 1918, the Government relaxed the conditions of payment of revenue tax until the famine ended.
Non-cooperation Movement
Gandhiji thought that the British having co operation from Indian citizens which leads them to servive in India and if this co operation turned in non cooperation then British rule became helpless. Keeping this in mind, he called for a non-cooperation movement. Jallianwala Bagh Massacre triggered the non-cooperation movement. Gandhi set the goal of Swaraj or self-governance, which since then became the motto of Indian freedom movement.
Salt or Dandi March
Gandhi's Salt March known as Dandi March where he started a Satyagraha campaign against the salt tax in March 1930. He marched 388 kilometres from Ahmedabad to Dandi in Gujarat to make salt was a core incident in the time of freedom struggle. Thousands of people joined him and made it one of the biggest marches in Indian history.
Quit India Movement
This movement started During the Second World War, when the British started recruiting Indians for the war. Gandhi protested strongly. Gandhi was determined to strike the British Empire with a definitive blow that would secure their exit from India and within half a decade, British were out of this country. – Window To News
