In 2011, social activist Anna Hazare had rocked then Manmohan Singh Government. His “ Anti-Corruption” crusade was catalyst in eventual downfall of UPA government which was already reeling under corruption charges. In 2011, his agitation became a mass movement and spread its wings in many parts of the country.
Anna is back again in 2018 at same venue of Ram Leela Maidan, to protest against the non implementation of The Lokpal Act with Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in the states. Will Anna repeat the same magic that he did in 2011, it’s anyone’s guess.
His hunger strike began on March 23. Recent banking frauds have fuelled public anger against corruption. So, timing of Anna’s agitation looks perfect.
But, unlike last time it has still to get a good response from public as the hunger strike enters its 4th day. This time the strike is sans the members of “India Against Corruption” like Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan , Yogendra Yadav and others, who had good organizational skills to manoeuvre the event. Although in 2011, the movement was apolitical but later it witnessed tacit support from BJP and other political outfits. Others like Baba Ramdev and others with mass appeal had encouraged it. Sea of people donning "Main Anna Hun" caps which was all over Delhi last time is nowhere to be seen this time.
There are 20 new faces with Anna this time. Most of them are unknown to common man. Anna has told new members sign an affidavit that they will not join politics. Anna should understand that politics, can be cleansed only by those who enter the field and not by staying out or away from it.
As of March 2018, and ever since The Lokpal Act was passed, the government is yet to appoint a Lokpal to investigate cases of corruption. Will Anna’s hunger strike force the present majority government to hasten the implementation of The Lokpal Act ? It will depend on response it gets from public and of course the media, which can create the hysteria in masses.
