Karnataka Elections: Much at stake for both Congress and BJP

Tuesday - March 27, 2018 2:51 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

March 27 (WTN) ; Karnataka Assembly grabbed media headlines even before the dates of elections were announced today.

BJP's IT Cell head Amit Malviya tweeted about the dates of the Karnataka Assembly election before the Election Commission announced it through a press conference, Randeep Singh Surjewala , INC In-charge, Communications raised fingers on BJP of becoming “Super Election Commission”. Although Amit Malviya deleted the tweet later, but it was he curtain raiser to battle between BJP and Congress in Karnataka Assembly elections.

In 2018, as Congress rule is reduced to 4 states, Karnataka is the only “big” Congress-ruled state. It sends 28 MPs to the Lok Sabha. For the Congress, retaining Karnataka is imperative.

Amid high-pitched rhetoric by both Congress and BJP, Karnataka government gave its approval for a separate religion status to the Lingayat community and accorded a minority status. Lingayat community constitute to seventeen per cent of the Karnataka 's population and the key catchment for both Congress and BJP. This decision is aimed at denting the vote bank of the BJP as its chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa comes from Lingayat community. As CM Siddaramaiah pulled the rug out of BJP’s feet, Amit Shah, BJP President rushed to Karnataka to woo back the crucial vote bank ahead of assembly elections and strategise accordingly.

Although BJP, Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) have made it that there will be no pre-poll alliances, in case that neither Congress nor BJP wins with absolute majority, JDS will be the “kingmaker”.

For BJP too, wining Karnataka is the gateway to increase its presence in south India. Presence in south India will give BJP the renewed confidence to win Lok Sabha elections in 2019, after setback in Lok Sabha Gorakhpur and Phulpur by-polls. After 2014, BJP has wrested power from Congress in Assam, Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Manipur. Winning in Karnataka will mean a lot to BJP’s dream of pan-India presence.
