Last Christmas

Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, popularly known as George Michael, is no more. The iconic pop star of the 80s and the 90s, saw his ‘Last Christmas’ on Sunday. A singer and song writer par excellence, George sold over a 100 million records in a career spanning close to four decades. He has regaled generations by his electric performances on stage. His videos are viral on Youtube. One of the most played artists on British radio right from 1984 to 2004, Michael was a two time Grammy winner and won the Brit Awards thrice, apart from winning three American Music Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards. Last Christmas …. : [audio src="http://www.windowtonews.com/mp3/AUD-20161228-WA0006.mp3"] Father Figure... : [audio src="http://windowtonews.com/mp3/AUD-20161228-WA0007.mp3"] Wake me up before you go.... : [audio src="http://windowtonews.com/mp3/AUD-20161228-WA0002.mp3"] Faith .... : [audio src="http://windowtonews.com/mp3/AUD-20161228-WA0003.mp3"] Careless Wishper... : [audio src="http://windowtonews.com/mp3/AUD-20161228-WA0001.mp3"]     George always made news and often for the wrong reasons— his sexuality, drugs, ill-health, lawsuits, arrests, accidents, politics— marked his celebrity run all through the 90s and later and rocked his personal life but he was also a philanthropist known for his charity works and a votary of human rights who stood by the LGBT community and questioned British government’s justification in sending troops to Iraq without consulting the people. But at the end of the day, his fans live for his music. What stands out for us after he is gone is his beautiful music, which will live forever. Music has a binding power; it transcends the boundaries of time and place, physical or cultural affiliations and makes us one across geographies. George Michael’s songs will remain to entertain us, make us happy, give us solace and evoke memories and passions. The songs are for all moods and seasons and spread love and warmth. Here’s where his greatness lies. Every time we listen to ‘Wake me up before you go-go’ or ‘Careless Whisper’, we will keep the memory of Michael alive in a corner of our heart. This year was a bad year for music lovers as three artistes of world repute David Bowie, Prince Rogers Nelson and Leonard Cohen passed away in close succession.History’s irony is that several pop artists have died comparatively young. Elvis Presley died young, so did Michael Jackson. And now except Cohen, all the three were comparatively young and had good some years of musical career ahead.  Beautiful things are like the lily of a day. Their beauty perhaps lies in their brevity. That’s why they are precious. People like George Michael are born once in centuries; there will be no other. He will remain one of history’s most celebrated and loved icons of pop music.
