The signs of suicidal tendencies & ways to prevent suicide

Saturday - April 28, 2018 9:44 am , Category : WTN SPECIAL

April 28 (WTN)- Youngsters’ growing tendency to commit/attempt suicide is a major global concern and the incidence is among the highest in India. The cut-throat competition in every field of life and the pressure to perform and be the best take their toll and young minds succumb to the pressure. It is very difficult to pick the suicidal tendencies beforehand while it is also equally important for parents and teachers to locate such possibilities in students and kids should the doubt arise and take preventive measures like express counselling etc. Parents have a big role to play in lessening pressure on their children and creating a holistic atmosphere at home to discuss things and find solutions together.

If children have a proper and open channel of communication and they have the belief that they would be heard and a solution to their problem found, they certainly will be more positive about life and better equipped to handle ruffling circumstances.

Any change in the general behaviour of children or youth must be closely watched. If parents and teachers are attentive, it is not difficult to do so. Change in food habits like eating more or less than general habit, keeping to one’s own self without interacting with peer groups, irritable mood, too much addiction to the internet, sleeping more than natural, turning abusive at home, talking of negative things frequently are some of the warning signs to look for. If one or more of them are present for any duration of time, it must be handled sensitively and immediately. Delay can be lethal. Parents often wait on to see if things improve or more aberrations are visible but that is a wrong approach because immediacy is the key. It takes seconds to end a life.

And the counselling and remedial session is a long and slow process, which is why the sooner it is begun, the better it would be. If needed a change of school/college, or change of place may be thought of or certain hobbies must be pursued by the victim of depression to come out of the lowness. It just needs words of courage, hope and goodwill to bring a person out of the dump if one is not chronically depressed or have some mental anomaly that promotes morbidity and suicidal tendencies, which then may need proper medical intervention.

Otherwise, it is not that difficult to save someone from a suicidal attempt by engaging him/her in productive, fruitful and interesting activities and continually telling him/her good things about life and hope. Morbidity of any kind is bred only by two reasons— one is the external situation that is oppressive and unsuitable to the person for him/her to adjust and the second is the mental state and capacity of the person to address those issues. The mind is not always prepared or uniformly strong in all situations to cope and flourish. Sometimes it gives way.

That is why, to show someone the correct path, two things have to be tried. One is to change the situation and the other is to strengthen the mind to be more embracing, resilient and unflinching. The strength of the mind comes from faith in oneself and one’s abilities and that can be instilled by counselling and care. The ultimate beginning is the right care and involvement of parents and teachers during the vulnerable ages of a person’s life. Their attentiveness to the mental and psychological needs of their wards can nip the wrong propensities in the bud and give the new direction to their thought.

Pressure is something which should never be imposed on the child because everyone has his/her own capacity and he/she has his/her own pace and pattern of handling things.

Any forced attempt at making someone excellent beyond his/her capacity and willingness often has the opposite result. Parents need to spend more time with their children and give them the right kind of emotional support before things run out of hand.
