Hard copy is not necessary in e-way bill, digital copy of e-bill is also valid too.

MAY 03(WTN) - The Allahabad High Court has issued an important verdict regarding the provision of e-way bills implemented last month. The court has said that any officer cannot seize the goods in case of non e-way hard copy of the bill.
