Why does not central government reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel?

MAY 25(WTN) - Will petrol be sold 100 rupees per liter in India? As the price of petrol is being increased every day and if the price increases every day, petrol may be up to Rs.100 per liter till the end of June. After the Karnataka election, the prices of petrol and diesel are continuously increasing since May 14. From 14th May to till now, the price of petrol in Delhi has increased by Rs. 3.2 per liter. Similarly, the price of diesel is also increasing in the last 12 days. Diesel price has increased up to Rs. 2.82 per liter till May 14.

Both the prices of petrol and diesel have reached to the highest level in the country. On Friday, the price of petrol in Delhi rose by 36 paise to Rs 77.83 per liter. Similarly, petrol price was Rs 80.47 in Kolkata, Rs 85.65 in Mumbai and Rs 80.80 in Chennai. In Delhi, the price of diesel increased by 22 paise to Rs 68.75 on Friday. A liter of diesel in Kolkata costs Rs 71.30, in Mumbai Rs 73.20 and in Chennai Rs 72.58.

If the prices of petrol and diesel being increased continually, then the day is not far when petrol in India would be sold for Rs.100 per liter. People are getting annoyed with the rising fuel price daily, but the central government is not reducing excise duty. The ministers of the government argue that the tax collected on petrol and diesel is to be spent in welfare schemes. The logic of the government may be right, but if petrol and diesel are going to be expensive then it is natural to increase inflation.

Oil companies are being benefited every day, but the general public has to spend his hard-earned cash on petrol and diesel if the government does not control the prices of petrol and diesel during the time, then the day is not far when petrol would be sold in 100 rupees a liter in the country. If this happens, this would be the biggest failure of the Modi government.
