Deputy chairman election in Rajya Sabha is a ‘massive challenge’ for BJP

JUNE 02(WTN) - Against the BJP, once again the opposition unity test is going to happen. During the election of the deputy chairman in the Rajya Sabha, once again the opposition solidarity created outside the House is to be tested. For your information, that the BJP has made it clear that the party will set its candidate for the post of deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The deputy chairman P.K. Kurien's tenure to end this month.

Giving information about deputy chairman election, union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the BJP will set up its candidate for the post of deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha. At the same time he also said that the candidate should be elected with everyone acquiescence. It is being said that BJP, if needed, we can seek cooperation from Congress also. It is reported that BJP’s vice president and party leader Prasanna Acharya and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of Trinamool Congress may be potential candidates for this post.

The BJP does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, without the help of other big parties, the ruling party can not seat its candidate in the deputy chairman post. In deputy chairman election, the role of TMC and BJD will be crucial because besides the Congress and BJP, the number of members of these parties is highest. Congress is ready to join hands with BJD to win its candidate, but BJD's stance is tilted towards the BJP. The Congress has tried to ensure that the unity should be remained same in upper house as same in outside the Rajya Sabha, so that the BJP could be defeated. It is believed that for this, the Congress party can withdraw its candidate and offer it to any other senior party.

For the majority in the Rajya Sabha, 122 MPs are needed whereas NDA has 105 MPs. Apart from this, it is difficult to win a BJP candidate even after the support of Independent MPs. On the other hand if the BJD supports the non-Congress parties, then the consent candidate of Congress can be accommodated in this post. Sources in the BJD say that the party may not support the Congress's expectations, but it can definitely consider the support of a non-Congress candidate.
