CIA has a very checkered history of organising coups in various countries that didn’t align with America’s views. Anyone who dared to disobey American diktats and failed to endorse its policies on politics and economy, had to face the consequences.
Anything detrimental to America’s interests was taken care of by the CIA. Named the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), this nodal international information collecting, analysing and processing body was established in 1947.
Since then, by various means it has been trying to keep anti-American forces in control by various covert and overt means. Its main purpose was to counteract the Russian KGB and destabilise/diminish the power and clout of erstwhile USSR. But it soon exceeded its brief and redefined its purpose by expanding its influence and clamping down on all anti-America forces, especially by nefarious means.
Way back in 1953 it organised the Iranian coup d’etat - when Mossadegh decided that the British won’t have any control over Iranian oil anymore. The British went to America complaining about that.
With Eizenhower coming to power, they organised a coup, overthrowing Mossadegh and installing the Shah that gave the oil to them and was very Western-friendly.
In 1954 the CIA organised the Guatemalan coup d'état. It supported the Guatemalan exiles planning the coup. After Guatemala finally got rid of dictatorship and had her first ever democratic elections, the US government accused them for promoting communism in the country and with the help of the CIA, the elected government was overthrown, sending the country into a bloody civil war.
The CIA then installed a pro-American government and the country was destroyed. In 1964 there was the Brazilian coup d’etat. Brazil had a left-wing president that helped the country in its development, bettered people’s living standard and for the first time, made it obvious that the country had a bright future.
However, the CIA didn’t like him and they supported the Brazilian Army in overthrowing him. A military dictatorship was installed that hurt the country and the people, taking away their civil rights and leaving a terrible record of various human rights violations.
Then there was the Chile coup in 1974. Salvador Allende was elected as a socialist president of Chile but he was not pro-American. Nixon (president at the time of the coup) along with CIA supported the police and the Army, creating the conditions to overthrow Allende and the attempts were successful.
The CIA then installed Augusto Pinochet as new president and the US government supported the military junta from the beginning. Of course there are other examples like Afghanistan, Iran, Vietnam, Iraq, Haiti etc wherein the CIA influence and involvement wrought havoc in these countries. Libya 2011 is a recent example -- the CIA supported the opposition in Libya and helped in the overthrow of Gaddafi.
The country was destroyed with the Civil War and Libya went from being one of the most developed and peaceful countries in North Africa to being one of the many devastated by war and anarchy.-Window To News
