Is Seychelles case a ‘failure’ of Modi government’s foreign strategy?

JUNE 18 (WTN) - India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign visits have been very much discussed. Opposition always raises questions on Modi's foreign visits, while the people of the country also want to know what the country is getting from the Prime Minister's foreign visit. The central government presents some statistics and gives statement on PM’s foreign visit, but the reality is that many small countries ‘behavior’ have raised questions about Modi's foreign policy by ‘non-cooperation’ in many matters of India.

Let’s talk about a small African country Seychelles. Seychelles has shocked India's efforts in dealing with China in the Indian Ocean. Seychelles has canceled the agreement with India to create a naval base in Assumption Island. For your information, let you know that in 2015, there was an agreement between India and Seychelles to create a naval base in Assumption Island. But as per the sources, now Seychelles has canceled this agreement.

The Seychelles President Danny Faure is about to visit India. But before the visit to India, Seychelles President Danny Faure informed to cancel the agreement to create a naval project in Assumption Island. India wants to create a naval base in Assumption Iceland so that they can stop the growing clutches of China in the Indian Ocean. As you know, China's activities are increasing in the Indian Ocean. That is the reason for concern for India.

According to information, Seychelles President Danny Faure is coming to India on June 25-26. On the tour of India, he will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but there will be no talks on the agreement to build a naval base in Assumption Iceland. Earlier, in 2015, PM Modi went to Seychelles and had signed an agreement for this naval base. The President of the Seychelles said that his country will arrange funds in the next year's budget to build a hideout for the Coast Guard in Assumption Iceland. He said that now there will not be a military base with India.

For your information, let you know that the opposition is repulsing the agreement for naval base between India and Seychelles. It is believed that the government of Seychelles failed to get the approval of the parliament on this agreement. The agreement has been canceled but there is no official declaration has been made, and so for statement from the Ministry of External Affairs has not come on this.

It is said that the Modi government has made a lot of efforts to implement this agreement. From former Indian Foreign Secretary S.Jaishankar to current Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, they tried very hard to get the agreement not be canceled. For this, the Modi government had also approached the opposition of Seychelles. But even after this, the Seychelles canceled the deal.

According to media reports, India had contracted 20 years deal with Seychelles. Under this, Jetties were to be constructed to set up an air strip and water vessels for Indian forces in Seychelles. Let you know that China itself has established its military base in Djibouti in the Indian Ocean. On China's move, India has become cautious. India was preparing to build its military base in Seychelles in view of China's antics. Some time before, the Seychelles government had said that it would be beneficial. In the northeast of Seychelles, illegal fishing, drug trafficking and theft will be prevented in 1.3 million square kilometers area. But even after the Seychelles government statement, the people of Seychelles were protesting against the Indian military base. It is believed that the people of Seychelles are suspected that Indian military activities will harm the environment there, besides the attendance of the Army; India's workers will reach Seychelles.

But whatever the cause, India has had a lot of losses from the step of the Seychelles. Separating from Seychelles' agreement, many questions rise on foreign policy of Narendra Modi government. It is not that the Modi government did anything to save this agreement, the efforts of the Modi government are commendable, but if the result does not come in favor of India then the Modi government's foreign policy once again seen failed.
