Teachers role like guardians in the school, says MP High Court
JUNE 23 (WTN) - Madhya Pradesh High Court has said in an important decision that if a teacher tries to scold his student for indiscipline, it can’t be considered as provocation for suicide. There was a time when the teacher used to beat the students and it was not a big issue. But these days, the scolding of the teacher also sometimes hurts the children so much that they take steps like suicide.
But in the last few years, beating children is completely banned in the schools, but such cases are still coming when any student committed suicide alleged beaten by teachers. One such case is from Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh, where in November last year, a 10th student class had committed suicide by annoying the principal's alleged scolding. The relatives of students had filed a case against the principal and accused him of inciting her to commit suicide.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed this charge and said that if a teacher scolds the child for indiscipline, it can’t be said ‘provocation’ for self-harm. The court also said that principals and other teachers are in the role of guardians in the school. Just as parents sometimes rebuke children for correcting their mistakes, similarly teachers also have the same motive. The court emphasized on the role of school in character building of children, it is possible that the students may feel embarrassed by the scolding of the teacher, but this is to improve them so that they do not repeat mistakes.
