Once upon a time when there was no voice of protest

JUNE 25 (WTN) - The date of June 25, 1975 will always be remembered in the history of the country. On this day the emergency was announced in the world's largest democracy i.e., India. On June 25, 1975, Indira Gandhi announced emergency in the country. But after 21 months she had to be forced to remove emergency. It is believed that Indira Gandhi announced the removal of the emergency after observing ‘political losses’. It is said that during the emergency, Indira Gandhi began to feel that if the emergency would not removed early then her opposition would start in her party itself.

Several reasons were responsible for the emergency. It is believed that after Indira Gandhi's son Sanjay Gandhi’s entry in the politics, the five-point program was implemented. The case of sterilization was spoiled under this five-point program and then Indira felt that abuse was happening now, she suddenly decided to remove the emergency. It is also said that Sanjay Gandhi wanted to keep the emergency for 35 years, but his mother, Indira Gandhi, decided to go in the election. During the emergency, the voices of protest started in Congress and senior Congress leader Babu Jagjivan Ram left the Congress party.

During the emergency, Indira Gandhi once said that opposition and their motives had become absolutely peaceful. But during the 21 month emergency, she had realized her ‘own mistake’ and the anger of the people. After this, on 18 January 1977, she suddenly announced for Lok Sabha election in March. Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi both lost in the Lok Sabha election in 1977 and the emergency ended on March 21, 1977.

The reason for the emergency is that the Allahabad High Court had convicted Indira Gandhi for ‘rigged’ in the election. According to the order of the law, she had to resign from her post and has to move out of parliament. But she refused to do so. According to the information, Indira Gandhi was advised to impose emergency in the country by immediate chief minister of Bengal, Siddharth Shankar Ray, he wrote a letter on January 8, 1975, in his letter, he wrote, “emergency is necessary to prevent chaos spreading in the country and to prevent the government from crushing itself.”

Emergency was in the country till 21 March 1977. The political battle of Jaiprakash Narayan reached the crucial point and Indira Gandhi had to leave the throne. After emergency the Janata Party was formed under the leadership of Morarji Desai. There were general elections in 1977 and the Congress was badly defeated. Indira Gandhi herself lost the election from Rae Bareli and the Congress got reduced to 153 seats. On March 23, 1977, at the age of 81, Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister. It was the first non-Congress government formed after thirty years of independence.

But the Janata Party government led by Morarji Desai could not go on for long. There was dispersal in the Janata Party and in July 1979 the government of Morarji Desai fell. After Morarji Desai, Chaudhary Charan Singh became the Prime Minister with the support of Congress. But his government could not move too much and in 1980 Lok Sabha election again held in the country. After the scattering in the Janata Party, in the Lok Sabha election of 1980, the Congress won again under the leadership of Indira Gandhi. After the emergency, Congress lost badly in the 1977 election, but in 1980’s Lok Sabha election Congress got public support and won 353 Lok Sabha seats with 43 percent votes in this election.

Emergency is seen as ‘opprobrium’ on the history of the country, when a leader kept the country in emergency for 21 months for her insistence. Opposition leaders were thrown in jail; there was no voice of protest. It is believed that during emergency, Sanjay Gandhi emerged as a bigger leader than Indira Gandhi.
