Did India miss Balochistan to become as one of its state after 1947 ?

Tuesday - July 17, 2018 1:38 pm , Category : WTN SPECIAL

  • Khan of Kalat, Ahmad Yar Khan had declared Kalat's  (One of province of Balochistan ) independence
  • All India Radio broadcasted that VP Menon, a civil servant  said that Khan was pressing India to accept Kalat’s (One of province of Balochistan ) accession.
  • Jinnah came into action immediately after All India Radio broadcast and annexed Kalat

WTN- On Independence Day speech of August 15, Prime Minister Modi had mentioned how Baloch people had thanked him for bringing attention to their plight in Balochistan and atrocities done by Pakistan. Narendra  Modi’s references was the first ever by an Indian prime minister in a public speeches. Modi reinforced the plight of Balochistan and it came to limelight again on world forum.

Baloch nationalists have been fighting the atrocities of Pakistan since Pakistan annexed it in 1948. At that time Balochistan had the princely states of Makran, Las Bela and Kharan and Kalat. While former three  acceded to Pakistan in 1947 after independence, the ruler of the fourth princely state, the Khan of Kalat, Ahmad Yar Khan had declared Kalat's independence as this was one of the options given to all of the 565 princely states by British.

Ahmad Yar Khan finally accepted to be acceded to Pakistan in 1948 after decisive bureaucratic tactics used by Pakistan.

Jinnah came into action immediately when All India Radio broadcast on March 27, 1948, reported a press conference by VP Menon, a civil servant who was Constitutional Adviser and Political Reforms Commissioner to the last three Viceroys during British rule in India.
VP Menon said that Ahmad Yar Khan “was pressing India to accept Kalat’s accession”, but “India would have nothing to do with it”. Although, Sardar Patel issued a clarification saying no such request had come.

Despite, Ahmad Yar Khan had accepted to be acceded, his brother, Prince Abdul Karim, to revolt against his brother's decision and never wanted to be a part of Pakistan. Abdul Karim refused to lay down arms and kept on fighting Pakistan army until 1950.

Had Indian government proactively supported the ruler of Kalat after they refused to be acceded to Pakistan, Balochistan would have been a part of India.
