Somnath Chatterjee wins Lok Sabha election for 10 times, loses only once
AUG 13 (WTN) - Former Lok Sabha speaker and veteran CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee passed away this morning. Somnath Chatterjee had been suffering from kidney disease for a long time and was undergoing treatment in a Hospital, In Kolkata. Somnath Chatterjee was 89 years old. He was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004 to 2009.10times MP Somnath Chatterjee was praised by his opponents.
Former CPI (M) leader Somnath Chatterjee was Lok Sabha MP for 10 times. He elected as Lok Sabha MP from Bardhaman, Jadavpur and Bolpur in West Bengal. However, he had to face defeat in 1984 Lok Sabha election against Mamata Banerjee form Jadavpur.
In the Congress-led UPA one government, he was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004 to 2009. Prior to this, he was awarded the best parliamentarian award in 1996. After the withdrawal of support from UPA one government by CPM (I), he was asked to leave the speaker post, but he refused to do so. Because of that, he was expelled from the party
Somnath Chatterjee was a member of the Central Committee of CPI (M), and he was known as Prakash Karat's opponent. Somnath Chatterjee was born on July 25, 1929 in Tezpur, Assam, in the house of Bengali Brahmin Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee and Veena Pani Devi. His father was lawyer and one of the founders of All India Hindu Mahasabha.
