AUG 16 (WTN) - Former India cricket team captain Ajit Wadekar passed away yesterday. In his captaincy, India first time won the test series in West Indies and England. He breathed his last at Jaslok Hospital and Research Center in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Ajit Laxman Wadekar is the full name of left-handed batsman Ajit Wadekar. He was born on April 1, 1941 in Mumbai. His international cricket career was only eight years. Ajit Wadekar played total 37 Test matches over all. In his test career he scored 2113 runs at an average of 31.07. He scored only one century (143 runs) against New Zealand in 1967-68.

Four times Ajit Wadekar was dismissed with 90 or more runs but could not complete the century. Once he also scored 99 runs. He made 14 half-centuries in his Test career. Ajit Wadekar played only two ODIs in his career. In which he scored 73 runs. His maximum score in ODIs was 67 runs.

In the 237 first-class matches, Wadekar scored 15,380 runs at an average of 47. His score was very good in the Ranji Trophy match. In one of the 1966-67 Ranji Trophy match, he scored 323 against Mysore.

Ajit Wadekar played a total of 18 Duleep Trophy matches, in which he was the West Zone captain for 6 times. He captained the Bombay team 6 times.

Ajit Wadekar is the only Indian captain who has won 3 consecutive series. In which two foreign lands and one in India In 1971, under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar, India defeated West Indies and England on the their ground. After this he defeated England in India in his captaincy.

In 1971 under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar, India won the five-Test series by 1-0 in West Indies. In this series, Kingston, Georgetown, Bridgetown and Port of Spain test matches were drawn. While in another Test match played in Port of Spain, India had won by 7 wickets.

India had won 1-0 in the three test matches series played in England in 1971. Lord's and Manchester. Test matches were played drawn. India defeated England by 4 wickets in the Test match played at Oval, in this way India won the test series by 1-0.
