WTN- The mass vacancy for filling up the posts of government school teachers is good news for the education sector of the state. Detractors may project it is as a government dole in the election year, but it was a long sought priority and can do a world of good to lakhs of children suffering due to lack of teachers.
Thousands of government schools in the state are running with lesser number of teachers than required for years. No appointment has been made on these posts for various reasons like lack of funds to pay salaries, or lack of availability of teachers and other logistic and financial reasons. Part time and contract teachers were arranged to manage the show. But this time, a major state-wide eligibility test is being conducted to fill up the hundreds of vacant teaching positions by the professional examination board.
The test will be conducted online at one go, wherein objective type questions on general awareness and aptitude in one paper and subject expertise in the other will be judged. This new development will also open up job opportunities for thousands of young educated youth who are interested in teaching and sitting qualified for the job. Their induction in the education system will bolster the government school setup and improve the quality of education. Private schools exploit teachers with paltry salary and load them with work, which leaves them frustrated. This is one reason why talented youth don’t usually opt for the teaching field in the present scenario. But the government school functioning is different. There is lot more mental space in government schools.
The pay package is far better and there are certain laid down government stipulations for the benefit and welfare of teachers which cannot be violated. This ensures job security and post retirement entitlements which a private school job cannot. Therefore, if government recruitments are regular, frequent and certain, then many more young talented youth will prepare themselves for the same and pin hopes for a better future. The best way to spruce up the government school system is to have good teachers. If teachers are good, students will want to attend classes and learning will be more solid and effective. If government schools get back their old glory and start producing good students, the monopoly and heft of the high-priced private schools will reduce. Many elite families, who today solely depend on private schools, too will think of utilising the low-cost government school benefit and enroll their wards in them. This will also lead the private schools to a price correction and facilitating their campuses better.
The government needs to enhance its budget on education and keep up the right momentum with paying due attention to the school education sector, which is the worst affected in the education hierarchy. School is the basic foundation on which a child builds his future. If his basic remains weak, he can never grow up into a strong thinking individual.
