WTN- Ayushman Bharat scheme has been finally launched with much fanfare by PM Narendra Modi. The long sought and needed scheme is going to benefit no less than 50 crore poor people in the country, making it the largest government healthcare scheme in the world.
India is a country with a large section of financially deprived population which has little access to better healthcare facilities that cost money. Private hospitals charge exorbitantly high, which almost 40 per cent of our people cannot afford.
A study says over the last 10 years, medical treatment cost in hospitals has increased by 300 per cent. Due to lack of awareness and mistrust, most Indians don’t have a health insurance policy cover, which further leaves them distraught in case of a medical emergency, leading to bankruptcy and dependence on exploitative moneylenders . All such poor, deprived and backward people will now be covered under the PMJAY.
Each one will have a Rs 5 lakh insurance, which will be paid by the government. Additionally, 2,500 new hospitals to tackle the increased patient numbers will be opened. Close to 13,000 hospitals are being empanelled under the scheme so that more and more patients can avail of this facility.
As a result of this augmentation of numbers, additional 2.65 lakh beds will be available for patients in government and private hospitals. Almost all kinds of diseases and their tests will be covered under the scheme, which include expensive treatments like heart surgery, brain/neurosurgery, cancer, eye operations and dental issues.
To ensure seamless interaction between hospitals and beneficiary patients at least 14,000 Arogya Mitras are being stationed at the designated hospitals. This will also ensure the effectiveness of the scheme and the lapses or lacunae coming up. Apart from these, 1.50 lakh new health and wellness centres are being established across the country to cover more and more people by making healthcare accessible to them even in the remotest corners.
The government has done all the homework and preparations addressing all concerns and issues beforehand so that once rolled out, the mega scheme is not in any way marred or inconvenienced by glitches. For any country health and education are the most rudimentary and vital parameters of growth and success. If a society is bogged down by the cost burden of illness, it loses its productivity. Its gross output diminishes and the optimal capacity of human resources remains untapped, defeating the benefit of the asset.
A healthy India is the key to an economically prosperous India. Despite making definitive strides in the medical sector, India still has wide discrepancies between those who can afford treatment and those who cannot. With this government scheme, all those who couldn’t afford high-end treatment can now do so, without spending a rupee from their pocket. This will increase patients’ propensity to visit the doctor and get early medical intervention so that infections don’t accelerate.
In our country, most people are generally reluctant to visit the doctor early on for the fear of high costs of tests and possible hospital stay. Now with the government taking care of the costs and footing the bill, the inhibition will fizzle, paving the way for better universal coverage of healthcare facility. ‘Ayushman Bharat’ will certainly prove as a stepping stone in India’s development roadmap.
