In America, the tradition of walking on the right side of the road

Different reasons of walking on the right side in the road in different countries

DEC 26 (WTN) - In India, we walk on the left side of the road and the steering of car-bus is on the right side, but in many countries of the world including the United States, people walk on the right side of the roads and the steering of car-bus is the left side. Have you ever wondered, why there is a custom to walk or drive on the right side of the roads in many countries, including the US, if you don’t know, then we describe you how the tradition of walking on the right side of the roads started in many countries.

It is said that the rules of street walking and driving on the road in different countries of the world started at different times. According to the information, in ancient times, in most of the world, there was tradition of walking on the left side of the road, but for the first time in the 18th century, the tradition of walking on the right side of the road began.

It is said that walking in the streets during ancient times and during medieval times was not always safe for pedestrians and they had to avoid and safe themselves to the robbers who came from the other side of the road. Since most people used to work with right hands, for this reason the swordsmen kept a sword in their right hand while walking on the left side of the road and could easily attack the enemies. It is said that for this reason it was customary to walk on the left side of the road.

Let’s talk about America, so in the 18th century, 'teamsters’ was started in America. A teamster was a big wagon, which a team of horses used to pull. These wagons didn’t have a seating seat for the driver, so the driver used to sit on the left horse and control the horse with the right hand whip. But due to this, the American people had to change the rules of walking on the left side of the road and the rules of walking on the right side of the road were implemented there.

It is said that the main reason for this change was that it was easy to sit at the left horse and keep an eye on the wagons coming to the right on the road or coming from the front. In the year 1792, the rule of walking on the right side of the road in the state of Pennsylvania in the US was implemented and by the end of the 18th century, the same rule came into effect throughout the United States and Canada.

Now talk about Europe, then here first in France, the law of walking on the right side of the road was implemented, but no clear reason has been found about why this rule was implemented in France. It is said that the French Revolutionary didn’t want to follow the order of the Pope, which said, “Walk on the left side of the road”, so the tradition of walking on the right side of the road began in France.

Some people say that the French didn’t want to follow the rules used by the British, for this, they decided to walk on the right side, some say that the rule of walking to the right side of the road in France was started by Napoleon .

It is said that later Napoleon spread the system of walking on the right side of the road to all the countries which were conquered by him. Even after Napoleon, most of the countries decided to continue the tradition of walking on the right side of the road. Here Germany occupied many European countries in the 20th century and implemented the system of walking on the right side of the road in those countries.

At present, in 163 countries around the world, the rule of walking on the right is followed, whereas in 76 countries there is a rule of walking on the left side of the road. Except Britain, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus, all countries in Europe have a rule to move on the right side of the road. If we talk about China, so in China there is a rule of walking on the right side on the road here, but the law of walking on the left side of the road in Hong Kong and Macau, which is in China's occupation, is followed.
