Shopping stores' responsibility to give Carry Bags without any cost, if refuse then complaint to Consumer Forum

APR 20 (WTN) - You go for shopping at the shopping stores. Many times you may have noticed that in the stores, you are charged money in the name of the Carry Bags. But do you know that the money demanded by the store for the Carry Bags is now against the rules. For your information, let you know that the Chandigarh Consumer Forum has imposed a fine of Rs 9000 on the Bata India Limited for a demand of Rs 3 for a paper bag for carrying a shoe box, purchased from the store, from a customer.

Law analysts say that this order of the Chandigarh Consumer Forum will be applicable in all over the countries in a legal way. It means if you buy goods from a store and demand for a carry bag from the same store, then the store can’t ask for the separate cash from the customer for that carry bag.

This important decision of the Chandigarh Consumer Forum was given on the complaint of Dinesh Prasad Rathudi. According to Rathudi, he told the Consumer Forum that he bought a pair of shoes from Sector 22D's Bata Showroom in Chandigarh on 5th February. Further Rathudi said that the showroom took Rs 402 from him, including the cost of the carry bag. Rathudi protested by saying that on one side Bata showroom is taking money from him for the carry bag and on the other side its brand is printed on the bag, which is not correct according to the rules.

Realizing that he was cheated in this whole matter, Rthudi sought compensation for a refund of three rupees and a reduction in service. When the matter reached to the consumer forum, the forum incorrectly rejected Bata for taking extra charge for the paper bag. The forum said in its order that the customer couldn’t be compelled to pay money to the carry bag, and doing so was a matter of direct service reduction.

The Chandigarh Consumer Forum's order is now legally valid in all over the country. That is, if any store asks for the money for the carry bag after buying the goods from you, then you can refuse to pay the carry bag money by referring to the order of the Chandigarh Consumer Forum.

The Chandigarh Consumer Forum has clearly stated in its order that even if the bag is environment friendly, the shopkeeper can’t take extra money for it. The Consumer Forum has clarified in its order that it is the duty of the store to provide the carry bags for free to the customers.

So keep in mind that whenever you go to buy goods at a store and after purchasing goods, you can refuse to pay for extra money for the carry bag. It is the responsibility of the store to provide carry bags after purchasing goods to the customers. If a store asks for money from you, then you can complain it in the Consumer Forum. We urge you to be cautious and aware of your consumer rights.
