Circumventions of Pakistan revealed
JULY 23 (WTN) – Just before Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s US visit, the Congress has released a report in the US which says that till the time Pakistan takes ‘decisive’ action against terror groups in the country, the military assistance it gets would remain suspended. After instructions from President Donald Trump, the US had stopped providing military assistance to Pakistan from January 2018. This is the first high-level visit by a Pakistani PM to the US under the Trump administration. Two pieces of news have surfaced from Pakistan that directly relate to India.
The first news is that international terrorist Hafiz Saeed has been arrested again by the Pakistani government. As he has been arrested repeatedly and repeatedly released on bail by the Pakistani courts, this new arrest is neither surprising nor the outcome doubted. His influence and effect is far, wide and deep in the country, whether or not he is around and unless all his creations are dismantled and rooted out, the game of arrest and release doesn’t mean much. This can only be called the cowardliness of Pakistan government that despite openly inciting violence and causing tension and disruptions in society, Saeed walks free in the country.
The recent arrest is being related to the fact that Imran Khan is going to be the guest of President Trump on July 22. Opening of the airspace for India a few days back is also being seen in connection with the Pak premier’s US visit. Imran wants to paint a favorable picture of Pakistan in the US. The only purpose is to get international assistance and try to get out of the economic doldrums the country is in. Imran Khan is ringing all the right bells and whistles to open up favorable communication channels with the west to build the image of a government that is serous in its intent and action.
Imran may have good motives to resurrect Pakistan’s lost clout in international affairs and he may aim at constructive beginnings but his hands are tied by the army, religious heads and terror groups, three underrated powers of pillar that rule Pakistan for all practical purpose. No matter how well Imran does, the results won’t be so easy to achieve because people haven’t forgotten what Trump had said last year, “America has only got lies and deceit from Pakistan.” Trust building, especially once breached, is a long and tenuous process which needs extra efforts and promising actions.
Imran may be making the right noises at this time, but he has to be decisive with his internal affairs and more proactive in setting his own house in order, before the world starts to believe him. The net gain, however, is the opening of the air space for Indian flights to the West which will save millions of Indian money and people’s precious time. For the good of the world and mostly Pakistan itself, Imran has to take some bold steps, show his honesty and courage and dismantle terrorist settlements in the country to lay the path of peace, for prosperity can never come without peace. The US or no country can save it from its doom unless it itself acts first towards a progressive future.
